A Bit Aaron and I Have

Audrey Kolker

He says we need a new hobby.
He says maybe a suicide pact.
He is kidding-not-kidding. Kidding. I felt real anger

alone last night in the laundry room
where the dirt of others interfered
with my ability to get clean.

New hobby. I say like crochet?
He says are you joking?
I say oh what do you want to do coke?

That kind of hobby?
He says yeah. Better than crochet.
He is taken with what he thinks

other people think of him. The thing is
I like him better than other people.
I say okay fine not crochet.

He says let’s go on a mission trip. He says
can you imagine? If they asked where we went?
He is amusing. Amused. I hauled my laundry

back up three empty flights of stairs.
Still dirty. Still others. Them thinking of us.
Wondering where we’d gone off to this time.
